EJC Board Meeting – February 24, 2011

Present – Ron, Joel, Ray, Pat, Ajay Sharma, George, Michelle, JoBeth, Andrea, Noe, Martha, Jonathon, Linda, Clo, Valerie, Glenda, Ovita, Caryl (10 board members)

Minutes – It was moved and seconded and approved to accept the minutes.

No Financial Report was ready at this time.  However, Ray said we have about $33,000 in the confirmed budget.

.

Pat Peterson then presented a report on Fund Raising.  In order to raise funds, we need goals, projects, an amount, a target audience, marketing strategy, tools and particular event ideas.  The board needs to take a leadership role in fund raising.  Each board member should make a financial donation each year.  Seventy percent of donations for non-profits come from individuals.  People give money for specific projects, not to keep the electricity turned on.  We need a fund raising committee and every member needs to be involved.

Linda brought up the fact that she has been working with Carrie Thomas on an event for Sunday, March 27th  from 11 – 7.  It would be a family event at a restaurant on North Avenue, El Paisano,  that can hold 1,000 people.  This would include Hispanic, white and African American families.  Carrie Thomas has an AA group of Hispanic people that is trying to raise money.  The restaurant would cost $500 and one of the groups that would be hired, Border Hoppers would cost $600.  Linda has donated $100 from EJC.  Admission would be $10 for adults, $5 for children age 13-18 and free for those 12 and under.  The event would be called New Beginnings.  Carrie is working on getting sponsors for the event.  There would be face painting, a cake walk, T-shirts and snacks to buy.

There was discussion of how to market the event to Hispanics, by handing out flyers at the flea market, and posting flyers at Hispanic markets.  It was suggested that we could study the flyers already up in the restaurant as models for other flyers.  There was discussion about being a sponsor for the event and concern about it being so close and not having enough time for publicity.  There seemed to be consensus that people in EJC did not want to work on this event.  Ovita already committed to getting a musical group for it and that was as much as we wanted to contribute, along with the $100 that Linda had promised.

It was moved, seconded and approved that we limit our partnership for the March 27th event to what we have already committed.  We also agreed not to take any money from this event.

It was moved, seconded and approved that we begin planning a Labor Day event now, as a fund raiser for EJC.

UGA events – Andrea talked about UGA students for higher education and the events that are being held at The Arch on Wednesday afternoons.  She also mentioned a panel on March 6th about the Hope Scholarship fund and a rally at the arch on March 9 for the Dream Bill.
