ESL and Immigrant Workers
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program was formed with the vision of helping day laborers become more successful in their work and daily lives through better English language skills. Classes are held at Home Depot and taught by student volunteers, and we teach an average of 11 students each cycle. These classes feature both formal lessons and less formal conversation in English. Students are encouraged to choose class topics and in this way are educated about current events, legal issues and American culture while simultaneously receiving English instruction.
Recently, the program has expanded to include classes directed at Hispanic women in the community. In the future, we would love to expand the programs to allow more people the opportunity to participate as both students and teachers, incorporating more classes each week and more varied locations.
