EJC in partnership with the Georgia Client Council Begin the “Out of Poverty” Family Engagement Project on July 21, 2010 in the Bethel Home housing Project. It was offered to the students of the new GED program being offered in Bethel Home. There are a few more slots available for eligible families: Following is an overview of the project:

Family Empowerment/Family Engagement Project
Economic Justice Coalition in conjunction with the Georgia Client council will work with 15 families with the goal of assisting families to learn skills to earn a Family Self Sufficiency/Living Wage. This project uses the state of unemployment as an opportunity for heads of households and other family members to receive skills based, civic engagement, and community leadership training that leads to a living wage job with health benefits as a way out of poverty. Families identified will be 200 percent below the poverty level. Each family will have a circle of support that will include mentors and advocates.
A menu of services will include: 1. Development of "circle of supports" with mentors/advocates for family members that need it. 2. Information and referral to needed services 3.EJC’s food pantry- A sack of Groceries given twice per month. 4. Occasional Day Employment through EJC Unity: Cooperative Labor Partners- Goal is at least two days a month. 5. Access to EJC's Computer Lab with possibility of free computer.
A menu of skill based and leadership training includes: 1.Job Readiness (resume Writing, interviewing skills, teamwork and etc). 2. First Aide CPR 3.Customer Service 4.Financial Literacy 5.Basic Life Skills (Positive Attitude, Problem Solving, Goal Setting etc.) 6. Civic Involvement and grassroots organizing. 7. Parent training 8.Female/Male Relationships

EJC is in need of volunteers for its voter engagement project to do voter registration and community education regarding sustainable wages. We need volunteers that can work any portion of Mondays and Tuesdays from 9-4 either at the Georgia Department of Labor Career Center or The Clarke County Family and Children Services.
EJC is in need of residential and commercial contract work for its Unity: Cooperative Labor Partners. Unity provides lawn maintenance and handy man services. Specific services include:

EJC completes WIA Summer Youth Program-On Friday July 30, 2010, EJC celebrated the completion of its work, academic and mentoring site for 8 youths under the Work Investment Act. The students did community organizing /civic engagement work, cleaning /moving services, sharpened their writing and vocabulary skills, learned financial literacy, had career day , visited Athens Technical College and University of Georgia. Thanks to Keith Johnson, EJC Program Coordinator, Clothilda Barnett, and Glenda Colbert; Co-EJC Assistant Directors for the Summer.
