Present: Tracy Smith, Ovita Thornton, Jeffrey Hill, George Oliver, Joel Izler Carla Freeman, Michele,
Quincy Watnher, Brian Cooper, Barbara Robinson, Ray MacNair, David Jarrett, Noe Mendoza, Humberto
Mendoza, Andrea Merriman, Nick Stanojovich, Dustin Christenson, Martha Lowe, Caryl Sundland , Linda
Lloyd, Delores Lee-Hill and several Georgia Works people.
Minutes - It was moved and seconded that the minutes be accepted. It was voted unanimously to do
so.
Action team reports – Dee – Voter registration – we went out to various locations – gave out absentee
ballots, gave rides to polls on November 2. Will offer rides to polls on November 30 for the runoff.
Unity – Jeff – We are doing well – carpentry, lawn maintenance, training. Great team to work with, have
been doing jobs for the elderly and disabled. Linda – we are doing marketing with flyers and there are
plans to make T-shirts to sell.
Family Economic Development – Working with Bethel Homes participants – teaching skills and educating
people on the importance of getting jobs with a living wage.
Worker’s Rights Center – Ray – The food pantry is active in Bethel Homes. Two new cards have been
printed, the orange one is in Spanish and the green one is in English. They were developed by the law
students interns for day laborers to learn how to avoid wage theft and be more aware of safety issues.
UGA Living Wage Campaign – Ray talked about the movie “Chop from the Top” and the need to show
it at more churches. Dustin reported that the rally on Wednesday at the arch has not been happening
lately.
Fund Raising and Grant Writing – Ray – The BCS information has been printed and the grant targets fund
raising issues. Ray discussed specific grants that have been applied for and are in process.
ESL – Dustin talked about teaching ESL at Garnett Ridge at the Boys and Girls Club in conjunction with
the Catholic Worker organization. Ray said ESL is being taught at the Day Labor Shelter on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings and Saturday morning.
Worker Friendly – At a stand still right now.
Office Management and Volunteer Organization – Dee – The office is being managed by a couple of
Athens Tech interns and Georgia works people. The Georgia works people are learning basic computer
skills, resume writing, dressing for interviews, and role playing for interviews. They are being asked
tough questions such as: about criminal backgrounds and termination from their last job. Georgia
works people have been asked to fill out a questionnaire on their skills and abilities. They were also
given evaluation sheets to rate the program and it seems things are going well. There was discussion
about linking Unity and Georgia works people together in cooperative agreements. Also there was
discussion of how to bring the day laborers from the shelter into the program.
Ray tlked about Cultural Work for Social Change and about sharing values. Caryl brought up the idea of
a Time Share Bank for a barter system and agreed to research this.
Web Design and EJC Marketing – Ray stated that we have two people working on this. He also
mentioned the idea of a National Campaign for Employment and getting unemployed people together
in churches with speakers and organizing for legislation. Dee asked if there was a letter or some written
information we could show to the churches. Ray agreed to send this out.
Board Development Committee – It was decided that the function of this committee is to evaluate the
board and determine how things are going. Ovita said she had a booklet with a survey for this purpose.
Martha Lowe agreed to chair this committee and to get the guide from Ovita.
Nominations for the Board – It was stated that there is a board quorum present so we can proceed with
the elections. Glenda Colbert, David Jarrett and Andrea Merriman were unanimously elected to the
board. Several current members were re-elected and Ray MacNair and Clothilda Barnett will continue
as co-chairs and Caryl Sundland will continue as secretary, Martha Lowe will be the treasurer. It was
stated the the Economic Justice Coalition is now looking for a bookkeeper.
Celebration – There were several awards given for special services completed and photos were taken.
Among those present to receive these awards were: Delores Lee Hill, Jeffrey Hill, George Oliver, Catrika
Yearby and Linda Lloyd. There is a major celebration planned for the Georgia works people at the
Department of Labor, probably December 4th. Ray also suggested we have a holiday party at Little Kings
and he will look into finding a date.
