Present: Pat Peterson, Andrea Merriman, Venzelle Stoners, Retiterta Rukumbika, Kadrice Yearly, Larry
Johnson, Traci Helms, Anthony Barnett, Darnell Brown, Betty Hull, Jeffrey Hill, Dolores Hill, James
Lloyd, Martha Lowe, Linda Lloyd, Jo Beth Allen, Ron Wynn, Jeffrey Jones, Clothilda Barnett, Nicholas
Stanojovich, Ray MacNair, Caryl Sundland (seven board members)
Minutes – Minutes were read silently and two corrections to spelling errors were suggested. It was
motioned and approved that the minutes be accepted with corrections.
Financial Report – Maria is working on this, but it was not ready for the meeting. Bank statement shows
$4,069 in the bank. This should keep the organization running through December.
Pat Peterson Report – Pat congratulated us on winning a $15,000 grant from BCS. She encouraged
people to attend the BCS trainings offered at various times around the city. Pat gave suggestions
about fund raising. Suggested writing Thank You notes when people donate, and encouraging in-kind
donations. She stated we need to practice asking people for money and then we will begin to feel more
comfortable with it. She suggested three ways to deal with fund raising: 1) Promotion – it attracts
prospective donors – have a success story to tell, have numbers to show the benefits to the community.
2) Accountability – show how much we do with our small budget. 3) Personal involvement – cultivate
relationships, get people personally involved with volunteering. Pat asked what is holding us back and
some answers were – lack of time, fear of rejection. Everyone needs to raise funds, needs to take the
risk.
Luncheon – Clo talked about the fund raising luncheon in December, with a Christmas giving theme, to
get the EJC story out and get donations. It was suggested that we get sponsors for the luncheon and
offer them a chance to get their names on our website, or give them a free yard cleaning. We need to
put a human face on the program by having someone who has benefitted from the program tell their
story. If this luncheon succeeds, there are plans to have another on in February, with a theme of giving
in the name of love. Another idea for fund raising was selling T-Shirts.
Unity – Workers have been doing yard work for free for disabled and low fixed income people. This
is to raise awareness of their ability and to generate jobs in the surrounding neighborhoods. It was
suggested that we could make a video of these experiences and put it on our website and facebook.
There was talk about how to get more people to look at our facebook page and it was suggested that we
need to friend some people. Linda would like to have a Thanksgiving food give away for 400 people this
year. Last year we gave food to 200 people.
Gerogia Works – Linda talked about the changes that let us have 53 people from GA Works. Linda has
set up several groups to work on different projects: office management, Unity work force, and civic
engagement. She wants to expand into personal support services, maid service, home aides, etc. The
civic engagement project will be going door-to-door this week to get out the vote. A rally is planned
for Bethel Homes the Saturday before election day to get 100% voter participation. There also was talk
about getting Hispanic voters out to vote.
EJC wants to have a celebration at the Labor Department to award certificates to the people who have
completed their 6 week training period.
Ray talked about the logic model for family development that he prepared for the second of three
meetings on evaluation that will be held tomorrow morning. He handed out the material he had
prepared for this meeting.
Living Wage – There was a demonstration for affordable education held in front of the administration
building in early October. Ray also mentioned the film “Chop From the Top” and getting out to more
churches. He is attending a meeting of the African American ministers and plan to show a short
portion of the film to them. It is thought that this effort saved many of the lower paid jobs from being
cut during the budget crisis at UGA. Maybe the students who made this film could be invited to the
luncheon and raise money that way.
Dignity for Immigrants – It was mentioned that Humberto was not here to talk about the Latinofest at
Cine Saturday at 10 P.M. There is also a program planned at Pinewood North Library for Sunday from 2-
4 P.M.
ESL – The program at the Day Labor Center is going well on Monday – Thursday from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
and Saturday at 10 a.m. They are developing the materials needed for the program.
Worker Friendly – after the push for this site on Labor Day, there were 136 hits on the website, but none
were actually serious inquiries.
Nominations for the Board – Clo reported that we now have 11 members and are planning on adding
two more. David Jarrett and Glenda Colbert have been nominated by the committee. They opened
the nomination process up to all members to contact the nominating committee with suggestions,
until November 12th. {Note: Ron Wynn, Clothilda Barnett, Ovita Thornton, Martha Lowe, Nicolas
Stonojovich, Noe Mendoza, JoBeth Allen, Pamela Voekel, Joseph Smith, Ray MacNair, and Caryl
Sundland, are also nominated to continue on the board}
The donation bucket was passed around and the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted: Caryl Sundland, Secretary
