Recent Updates with the EJC and Human Rights

May 14 and 15, 2011, the Athens Human Rights Festival included three presentation opportunities for the Economic Justice Coalition.  Following the three undocumented immigrant high school activists, we spoke of how it is that "children can raise a village."  EJC is a member of the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition.  We provide ESL, English language training at the day labor shelter on Saturday mornings.  We engage law students of the Public Interest Project of the Law School in cases of wage theft and related employer violations.

On Monday, May 16, we participated in an Immigrant Rights workshop in the library of Pinewood North Mobile Home Park.  The Mendoza brothers managed that workshop in Spanish and in a highly professional manner.  On May 17, the high school students were featured again in a rally at the Arch on Broad Street, just as they were on April 29 for three hours.  The chants included "Undocumented, Unafraid," and "YES to Education; NO to deportation."

On Thursday, Linda Lloyd of EJC led a group into the Town Hall Meeting of Congressman Paul Broun in the building of the Veterans for Foreign Wars (VFW).  She was then featured in an article of the Athens Patch e-newsletter.

Needless to say, we were not satisfied with most of his comments in the Town Hall Meeting.
